Wicker Furniture Maintenance and Cleaning
To preserve cane and wicker furniture and ensure that it lasts for decades it is necessary to follow a few simple care instructions.
- Avoid placing wicker items under direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time
To clean wicker made from twisted paper or grasses or midly dirty rattan, willow or sea grass:
- Wipe with a damp cloth
- Place outdoors to air and dry as moisture can cause mould
To clean wicker that is made from extremely dirty rattan, willow or sea grass:
- Brush or vacuum off as much surface dirt as possible
- Turn the item on its side to allow water to run off rather than resting between strands
- Check that there are no unusual gaps between the strands of wicker as they will dry in this way and make your furniture take on an irregular shape
- Then wipe with a soft cloth and soapy water. (If possible add one or two teaspoons of ammonia to the water). Do not over saturate the wicker
- Wipe thoroughly with a clean damp cloth to remove all traces of soap (and ammonia)
- Pat dry with an absorbent towel to remove all visible drops of water
- Place outdoors to air and dry as moisture can cause mould
To restore unpainted or natural wicker to its warm glow:
- Rub with linseed oil
- Gently wipe off the excess
- Let it dry for several days before sitting on it
For general maintenance:
- Apply a light coat of good furniture polish to protect the Cane and Wicker
You can now enjoy your cane and wicker furniture for decades.
